THE CENTRES OF EUROPEAN CULTURE ARE 20 YEARS OLD!

Time crystallizes diamonds and pain. Every person – over 12,000 – who has experienced an exchange at one of the Centres of European Culture realises that each of these exchanges is a stage where everything we are made of is intensely played out. This leaves impressions, deep impressions.
From 15 to 17 May, crowds of you will be here for this 20th anniversary to witness and to share the Europe we have learned about together.
It is a time of jubilation, a time of celebration.
Each and every one of you who knew Maurice Rocheteau, a voluntary fireman and our night watchman in France, Spain, Italy and Rumania, who passed away on 26 February 2009, remember a simple, very warm man, who did not speak any foreign language, yet his language was universal.

What’s new at the Centre
- HEREDUC : A different view on heritage education
A different view on heritage education is a 5-day European training course on heritage education. It is aimed at both teachers in secondary education and educational guides or officers who want to start with heritage education and are looking for tools to get started or who already have experience with heritage education and want to stretch their thinking. The course aims to engage its participants actively to experience heritage by means of art-based methodologies.
The course content has been developed, for the third time, by De Veerman (The Ferryman), a Flemish arts educational project organisation.
Starting from a theoretical introduction on what heritage and heritage education is, it goes on to explore the Abbey of Saint-Jean d ’Angély and the surrounding area and cities by means of observation and exploration exercises, active workshops and guided visits. Specialised knowledge of heritage themes and/or art disciplines is not required. Every day, sufficient time will be given to the participants to present their own experiences, to exchange ideas and to reflect upon their learning.

- "Aulnay, d'ombre et de lumière"
The latest book from Rémy Prin (www.parole-et-patrimoine.org) will be released in April 2009, published by Bordessoules.
What is the point of heritage?
This is a poetic journey to the heart of Roman art, a very concrete journey first of all, stone by stone, into the soul of a place. An internal journey also, full of wonder which enchants and questions.
This is a book which takes many courses, from breathtaking spaces, to the coherence of religious figures from the marvellous bestiary (bestiaire merveilleux) to the medieval imagination, from influences of the East to the visual richness of motifs which create a setting for images … Images? Or rather “ymages”, an old French word which relates to sculpture. Rémy Prin knows how to weave the dialogue between the writing of the poet, who lives on the history of art, and its images (numerous photographs have been taken by him especially for this book). He suggests through the sculptures, described one by one, the rumours of the world. Fixed in the territory between Saintonge and Poitou, exploring all the facettes of an exceptional Roman art about which François Mitterand said to Marguerite Duras that it was “a masterpiece of the world”, the book retains the imagination like a thread and makes discovering heritage a meeting, a dream, an inexhaustible mine.
What is the point of heritage? This book does not ask the question, it answers it.
