Editorial

"Movements of populations yesterday and today; rejection and opening" (March 2008) and "European citizenship and intercultural dialogue" (April 2008) ; these are the latest two meetings of young Europeans which brought together two hundred people and gave rise to intellectual, artistic and humane exchanges, the effects of which have not yet subsided.
We end this academic year with young Germans, Spanish and French handling a subject which is also in the headlines : "Man and nature; water, a major stake" from 14 to 28 June.
But the CCE is also dedicated to the territory of which it is a part. The concerts and the creations in residence which take place during the festival season; directly affect all of the surrounding population, benefitting artists, inhabitants and tourists alike.
You will find below details of our next projects and achievements, and we wish you a lovely summer.

- NUITS ROMANES 2008

For the third consecutive year the Centre of European Culture St Jean d’Angely in close partnership with the Pays de Vals de Saintonge, the Maires of Aulnay de Saintonge, Varaize, Fenioux, the service of the village of art and history from Saintes and all the local associations wishing to offer the benefits of their experience.
All these demonstrations are free of charge and are both educational and cultural. In proposing formulas of new readings, in provoking an exchange between heritage and contemporary creations, the festival “Nuits Romanes” funded by the region of Poitiou Charentes allows a different voice on this subject.
Through the residence of Aulnay de saintonge, an emblematic site for Romanesque art in the Poitou Charentes we wish equally to value and propose the discovery of an abandoned rural Rome and to give it indirectly, by use of recognised contemporary artists, a regional influence.

The project, the artists

The artistic project of the residency, of this creation, « for » and « at » Saint-Pierre d'Aulnay consists of intimatley crossing the Romanesque heritage building with contempory dance and the local propulation around a common project.
The creation presented in Aulnay will then be adapted to the Romanesque churches in Fenioux and Varaize.

The process of mediating with the public

As far as creations in residency within the Nuits Romanes Festival of the Poitou Charentes region are concerned, we have chosen the Compagnie Pascali because of the work it has already carried out and for the events it has held at heritage sites.
Since 2003, at the same time and in addition to showing in theatres, the Compagnie Pascali go to places which have their own history, ie heritage sites. Contemporary art museums, urban or rural public spaces, spaces of "artistic fabrication", former factries or monuments - all become, for the duration of the residency, scenes of in situ and unusual choreographic creations.

In this process, several artistic qualities are displayed :
- that of experiencing the crossing and synergy of several artistic and contextual universes (choreographic, plastic, image, architectural, musical, historical, real life)
- that of permanently questioning the place of the artistic act in its links to society and the circumstances in which it is seen.

A connection to a re-educated public

Although contemporary dance is considered by many as still being a "terrible" art, these encounters turn out to be very fulfilling experiences. Each time, the team is anxious to "meet" its public in a privileged way and has been able to develop a sense of communication which enables them to adapt to every type of public.

News

- Now showing – Les Hauts Murs

The Cristian Faure film, based on the works of Auguste le Breton, partly filmed in the Royal Abbey is at the moment showing in Saint-Jean d'Angély.

For Yves Treguier, a fourteen year old orphan, the 1930's France is that of correction houses. Only just arrived in one of theses « surveyed education houses » a drab building surrounded by high walls, Yves, king of escapes and an eternal dreamer has only one idea on his mind, escape, go to a port and jump aboard a boat for New York.

Alain Ohnenwald, director of the Centre of European Culture, spoke at the avant premiere on the 26th April.

- RELOCATE ICI

One of the main concerns of Relocate Ici is Integration. To integrate it is important to understand the country you live in and how the different structures work.
On this note Relocate Ici is organising 2 information mornings.
- 13th May - Healthcare, seminar given by Soficas
- 16th May - Tax and banking, seminar given by fimeco and la Banque Populaire

As mentioned in previous newsletters we are working with the local hospital creating a bilingual questionnaire. The staff at the Accident and Emergency Department have been testing the questionnaire. After this trial period there are a few modifications to be made.

In conjuction with this questionnaire the A+E Department are offering to Relocate Ici members a first aid course. Again this will help our members with their language and integration.
