Editorial

There is much to celebrate! The 50th anniversary of the Rome treaty
and the 20th anniversary of the first cultural itinery of the European
Council, the pilgrimage route of Saint-James of Compostela. The Centre
is celebrating as best as it knows how to by hosting, throughout the
year, young Europeans during intercultural encounters, vital to their
future.
More than ever we are convinced that the construction of Europe cannot
go forth without including such like encounters in the school curiculums
of the member States.
How can we look upon our failures with surprise if we do not want
to understand that the Europe of citizens cannot be constructed with
exhortations and programmes reserved for the elite or, due to lack
of granted means, to too few youngsters?
We must finally become awear that it is only from personally experiencing
other cultures, all the cultures present on our territories, and creating
and consolidating fraternel bonds during these exchanges and confrontations
that our continent can give it's potentiatilies a chance. How can
we begin to hope, without making these efforts, to see Europeans,
all Europeans, act together for their common future at that of the
planet?

director of Centre of European Culture

- The
Centres' new website is on line!
It is here! At the tail end of
2006 the Centre of European cultures' new web site was launched. Its
objective is to be more ergonomic and practical for the user.
The chapters have been totally revised in order to present in a much
clearer fashion the Centres' activities, starting by the homepage
which has been literally split in half in order to identify on one
side the cultural missions and on the other the Abbeys' reception
facilities.
According to this, your newsletter has also been redesigned.
Please do not hesitate to let us know what you think and of you wish
to make any suggestions please feel free to do so. Enjoy your visit!

- Let's
communicate : Socrates Grundtvig 2 project
Within the framework of the Let's
Communicate project, a service named "Relocate ici" has
been created in order to facilitate the integration of foreigners
in Saint-Jean and its surrounding areas.
The association is run by Jenny Frost and Sam Bottomley, both of whom
are British and have lived in France for eight years; they have literally
fallen in love with the country, its culture, climate and lifestyle
"à la française".
The aim of the association is to help British people who wish to settle
in France. "We help with the administrative processes involved
in having electricity or a phone line installed, or with obtaining
vehicle documents, for example. Sometimes we have to act as interpreters
because their French may not be up to yet", says Jenny Frost.
But clients are also expected to take part in process. As she explains,
"we don't do the work for them; we just help them. That's the
best way to get them involved and, consequently, helps them integrate
more easily".
French classes are held twice a week, on Tuesdays and Fridays. There
are also plans to offer English lessons so that locals can communicate
with these newcomers from the other side of the Channel.

Good
news.
The Grundtvig 2 project has won
a prize! On the 7th December 2006 the Belgian partners of the project
recieved the ELIT award, European Lable for Innovative Language Education.
The Let's Communicate project of which the CCE is the coordinator
was nominated because of the
- clear presence of a European dimension
- active involvement of the learners
- real efforts made to make the results and the methodology of the
project transferable
- strong motivating character for teachers and learners
- target group for which not so much material has been developed so
far.
Here
is some information concerning the project and the prize in Duch.
