RESIDENCIES Why residencies ? What are the implications for culture in the European Union? I see a fundamental and immense role for culture : to show the soul of Europe. Probably not to create the soul as this has been forged over the many centuries of history, but to make Europeans aware, in particular young Europeans, what the soul of Europe means, the forms it could take and that it should take in the future …
Catherine LALUMIERE,
Through the objectives it sets itself - encounters, discovery and sharing between Europeans, the Centre of European Culture appears to be a privileged place of exchange and creativity at the heart of the Poitou-Charentes region. With 15 years experience in musical residencies, the Centre would also like to develop the visual arts residencies. By giving a European dimension to this commitment, we are reminded that artists have been travelling the continent for centuries. At a time when Europe is at the heart of our debates and in all our spirits, the artist in residence creates a memory, puts thoughts into circulation and gives substance to creation. The objective of these residencies is therefore to make this creation process visible and tangible. For the artist to share this process with the young Europeans who take part in our multinational encounters as well as with the local community in order to create mutual benefits and a better understanding of contemporary art - that is the Centre’s contribution.
